The publication is designed to deliver high-calibre and thoughtful commentary on public policy. It is claimed that its "interactive forums and reviews will offer a decisive and non-partisan atmosphere for the politically engaged reader." Slate is now online. It is planned to charge an annual subscription after the US Presidential election in November. It is interesting but very much US orientated. It may well be setting a new trend. hhtp://www.slate.com

Records Management Association of Australia's 1996 National Convention will be held in Canberra from 8 to 11 September at the National Convention Centre.

The theme, "Re-engineering - the Electronic Records Future", reflects the organisational challenge of the 90s as most organisations have experienced restructuring in many forms in recent years as they have adapted to difficult and changing economic conditions.

Managers are being confronted with the need to raise productivity and this can mean changes to job design, organisational structure and culture, and management systems. When coupled with the explosive growth in technology options and usage, it represents a genuine challenge to management.

The Convention has been structured in a manner which will lead delegates through the various aspects of re-engineering in an information management environment. The first day will concentrate on contemporary development in corporate and administrative practices and the effects of review and restructuring processes as it relates to information management.

Management of information itself, and the workflow processes inherent in that management, are the subject of the second day's activities.

The third days is given, generically, to technology and how the dynamics of the information carriers, the hardware and the software, the storage media, transcribers and translators of information, influence the decision and product of today's and tomorrow's workplace. Accent Software International is a leader in the field in Unicode based word processing and their Accent Multilingual Word Processor (which is distributed freely) lets you prepare text in over 30 languages automatically remapping the keyboard, the display and even the spelling dictionary, even allowing left-to-right and right -to-left languages to coexist on the same line. Word processing is vital for multilingual text creation, but useless for creating Web pages because most browsers can't read Unicode. With Accent's Multilingual Mosaic (also distributed freely) a Uni-code based browser and helper application for Netscape Navigator, you can look at a Web page created in any of Accent's over thirty supported languages, and you'll see the text properly displayed. It's searchable and selectable.

Accent also sells an all-in-one package ($US.99), "Internet with an Accent", which bundles the word processor and browser with Multilingual Publisher, a boon to anyone creating Web pages in languages other than English.
