IN THE NEWS

The Beginning...

Thirteen years ago a light pen on a personal computer was amazing technology. We've come a long way since then (or have we?). Take note of the sign in the background which reads 'ACT IBM PC Users Group'. Do any of our readers know if this was the humble beginning of the PC Users Group (ACT) Incorporated? Big Day for Computer Fans

Hundreds of computer enthusiasts filed through the Microprocessor Special Interest Group computer exhibition at the Lakeside International Hotel yesterday.

The exhibition, one of the largest staged in Canberra, was a major event in Information Technology Week.

Computers from 39 companies represented some of the most sophisticated equipment in the information technology field.

For the second successive day the Member for Canberra, Mrs Kelly made her "last" public appearance before becoming a mother.

She agreed to a last-minute request by organisers to act as a replacement for the Opposition spokesman on primary industry, Mr McVeigh, at the exhibition's opening ceremony.

Mr McVeigh was unable to attend because he was stranded in Sydney by the airline pilots' dispute.

The winner of the Commodore 64 computer in the competition run by The Canberra Times and Steve's Communications Centre, is Gillian Dowling, of Osburn Drive, MacGregor.

The winning entry was drawn last night at the Lakeside exhibition.

And Now

Australian Internet Society

Sydney, 30 October 1996

The Inaugural General Meeting of the Internet Society of Australia will be held in Sydney on Wednesday 27 November 1996, to coincide with Interop, a premier networking conference. After much discussion over the past year (carried out on the Internet, naturally!) the Society is being formed as an advocate of Internet users in general. It will seek to foster better understanding of the Internet and to participate in the improvement and extension of the Internet for Australians and the world. The Society is a chapter of the global Internet Society and is modelled after similar chapters in other countries, notably Switzerland and the United States.

The founding board of directors is Mr Hugh Irvine (Director, connect.com.au), Associate Professor Bob Kummerfeld (University of Sydney) and Mr Geoff Huston (Secretary of the Internet Society and Technical Manager of Telstra Internet). Each has a long and distinguished history of service to the Internet in Australia and abroad.

"This is the Society for everyone", says Geoff Huston. "We want this body to be relevant to the very broad base of Internet users, publishers, developers and others who make the Internet what it is today. There are plenty of organisations for business; this one is for people. If you use the Internet and are interested in the things that affect its development in Australia and the world, the Internet Society can be your voice."
