- Finn Blucher from Novell
presented OpenOffice.org at
this meeting.
- In particular Finn touched on each of the modules
which made up OpenOffice.org and took us through the look and feel of each.
- OpenOffice.org is the main
contender in office productivity tools coming from the open source stable of products.
- Under the open source scheme
it is available to users free of charge and yet it asserts itself as a serious
competitor to MS Office in the essential productivity stakes.
- It’s easy to change to
OpenOffice.org as it has a familiar feel if you have used competitive software and it reads all
major competitors’ files.
- Finn was available to discuss any significant differences between
OpenOffice.org and its competitors and also any differences between the Windows and
Linux versions of the product. He was aware that a large number of OpenOffice.org users at PCUG
use the Linux operating system.

- The October meeting was PCUG's
Annual General Meeting.
- Ann Byrne accepted
nomination for President, and welcomed in the 2008 committee.
- As reported in
the February Issue of 16 Bits, Ann Byrne was awarded Life Membership to
the PCUG .
- We
look forward to the committee year ahead with Ann's contagious
inspiration.

- This month we will be
looked at Microsoft Office 2007.
Denise Holehouse, a Solution Specialist with Microsoft Australia at
their Canberra office, demonstrated the features introduced or improved
with this version of Office including the new ‘ribbon’.
- Office 2007 includes
several modules - Access, Communicator, Excel, Groove, InfoPath,
OneNote, Outlook, PowerPoint, Project, Publisher, SharePoint Designer,
Visio and Word – in different combinations, depending on which suite
you prefer.
- The suites start at the
Basic (Excel, Outlook & Word) ranging through eight variations up
to the Enterprise suite. Users can get the suite that best meets their
needs.
- System requirements differ
from suite to suite and the grammar and contextual spelling in Word is
not turned on unless the machine has 1GB of memory.
